Reading the Australian passport figure
Lodged at the post office, issued by DFAT
Australian passports are issued by the Australian Passport Office within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with lodgement through Australia Post inside the country and through missions abroad. Adult and child passports are issued for different terms, and children's passports require consent arrangements that adult applications do not.
A planning figure that excludes the post
The published figure is a planning expectation for the routine service measured from lodgement. It excludes the time an application spends in the post in either direction, and a paid priority service describes a separate and shorter commitment rather than a discount on this one.
Photographs, overseas lodgement, and consent
Photographs that fail the specification are the most common cause of a returned application. Applications lodged abroad travel further and take longer than the domestic figure suggests. Where a child's application lacks the consent of everyone with parental responsibility, the application cannot proceed until that is resolved, whatever the processing queue is doing.
