The six-week period begins when you lodge and pay. The Passport Office says above 97% of travel documents were available within six weeks as at August 2026.
These figures apply to eligible, complete applications lodged in Australia. Complex child applications without full parental consent are excluded from the normal six-week measure, and overseas applications can follow different delivery arrangements.

Reading the Australian passport figure

Australian passports are issued by the Australian Passport Office within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with lodgement through Australia Post inside the country and through missions abroad. Adult and child passports are issued for different terms, and children's passports require consent arrangements that adult applications do not.
The six-week measure reaches all the way to availability
The Passport Office's current six-week measure begins when you lodge and pay and ends when the travel document has been delivered, delivery has been attempted, or you have been told it is available for collection. That makes it broader than an internal printing time. Fast Track and Priority are separate paid services with complete published planning timeframes that also allow for the application reaching the Passport Office and for postage.
Photographs, overseas lodgement, and consent
Photographs that fail the specification are the most common cause of a returned application. Applications lodged abroad travel further and take longer than the domestic figure suggests. Where a child's application lacks the consent of everyone with parental responsibility, the application cannot proceed until that is resolved, whatever the processing queue is doing.
