The CRA's service standard is a notice of assessment within about 2 weeks when you file online, and up to 12 weeks when you file on paper. How you file is the single biggest factor in your wait, and direct deposit decides how fast the money arrives once assessed.
This guide covers the online and paper timelines, what a review adds, and how to track your return so you are not guessing.

Notice of assessment
About 2 weeks online, up to 12 weeks on paperThe notice of assessment confirms the CRA agrees with your return, or explains changes. This is the service-standard milestone.
Refund paid
Direct deposit is fastestWith direct deposit the refund follows the assessment quickly. A mailed cheque adds delivery time.
Why paper is so much slower
A paper return has to be received, opened, and keyed before it can be assessed, which is why the standard is up to 12 weeks rather than two. If you can file online, you move from the slow lane to the fast one for no cost.
Filing early in the season also helps, because processing slows near deadlines when volume peaks. Have your slips before you file, since a missing T4 or T5 can trigger a mismatch and a review.
Reviews are normal and not an audit
The CRA may ask for documents to support a claim, such as donations or medical expenses, after assessing your return. This review is routine and not the same as an audit. Respond by the date requested through My Account, because the refund or a reassessment waits on your reply.
When the refund is slow, what helps
It has been past 2 weeks on an online return
What helps
Check the progress tracker in My Account. If it shows a review or a request for documents, supply them promptly, because assessment waits on your response. Peak season near deadlines also stretches times.
You filed on paper and are still waiting
What helps
Paper is assessed within up to 12 weeks, far slower than online. There is no way to speed a mailed return; filing online next time is the fix.
The CRA asked for documents
What helps
Upload exactly what is requested through My Account by the deadline. A complete, prompt response is the fastest route back to your refund or a corrected assessment.
Your refund was applied elsewhere
What helps
A refund can be kept and applied to amounts you owe the CRA or certain other debts. The notice of assessment explains any amount applied rather than paid to you.
Your dates make this page better
Official numbers cannot show what applicants actually experience month by month. Sharing your application and decision dates helps the next reader see the real pace. Under a minute, dates only, nothing personal.

How long does a CRA refund take?
About 2 weeks for returns filed online with no issues, and up to 12 weeks for paper returns. Direct deposit speeds the payment once your return is assessed.
How do I check my refund?
Use the progress tracker and My Account. They show where your return is and flag any request for documents, which is usually what a longer wait is about.
Does a review mean I am being audited?
No. Post-assessment reviews asking for receipts are routine and separate from an audit. Respond by the requested date to keep things moving.
Why did I not get my full refund?
The CRA can apply a refund to taxes or other debts you owe. Your notice of assessment explains any amount applied instead of paid.
