Pakistani passport renewal in the UK: appointments, the online route, and what takes how long

The Manchester consulate releases the coming week's appointments in a single window, Saturdays at 10:00 in the morning, for every service it runs. One weekly release serving the Pakistani community across the North West produces exactly what you would expect: a rush, gone-in-minutes slots, and a weekly spike of people searching for what happened. The mechanics reward preparation over persistence; an account signed in before the window, details ready to paste, beats refreshing all week.

If Manchester will not yield a slot, the same national system serves Bradford, and Birmingham, Glasgow, and the High Commission in London run their own capacity. Check each mission's booking page and catchment guidance rather than assuming Manchester is the only door, and check the e-service before fighting for any appointment at all, because a qualifying renewal does not need one.

DGIP's online renewal is built for the most common case: an adult renewing an existing machine-readable passport with no data changes. Qualifying applicants complete the form, upload the photo, and pay online, and the process runs without a consulate visit, which converts the hardest UK-side queue into no queue at all. DGIP has also announced a mobile application intended to widen online applications for overseas Pakistanis.

Cases outside the happy path, first-time applicants, lost or damaged passports, expired-beyond-limits documents, name or data changes, and most children's cases, still route through a mission. If the portal turns your case away, that is the system telling you which queue you are actually in, and the Saturday window becomes your path.

DGIP issues passports against NADRA's identity database, so the application requires a valid NICOP or CNIC, with details that match. The classic failure is discovering an expired NICOP at the appointment, which converts one renewal into two applications and doubles the queueing, because NADRA card services run on the same scarce consulate appointments.

The fix is sequencing: check the NICOP expiry the day you decide to renew the passport. If it needs renewal too, NADRA's own online channels handle many overseas card renewals, and consulate appointments cover the rest. Data mismatches, a spelling, a date of birth, an address history, deserve the same early attention, since the passport prints whatever NADRA holds.

Once biometrics are captured, the application joins DGIP's central production queue in Pakistan, where the published guidance is 10 to 15 working days for normal processing, about 5 for urgent, and about 2 for fast track in selected cities. Urgent fees act on this stage alone. Reporting has described backlogs running to hundreds of thousands of passports with deliveries slipping well past the published figures in bad stretches, which is worth knowing when a travel date depends on the renewal.

The return leg adds real days too: the printed book travels back to the mission or, under DGIP's announced delivery arrangements, to your door via courier. Track with the token from your receipt, and plan any ticket-buying around the whole chain, appointment, processing, and return, rather than the middle number alone.

DGIP's modernization push has produced dated, verifiable changes: passport offices stopped accepting cash from July 1, 2026 in favour of bank and mobile payments, home delivery was announced with TCS handling Pakistan and DHL named for overseas missions, and the government has announced a transition from machine-readable passports to chipped e-passports. Each lands at missions on its own schedule, so the consulate's page is the authority on what applies to your application at the time you file.

None of the announced changes alters the fundamentals covered above: NADRA identity first, an appointment or the e-service, central printing in Pakistan, and a return leg. Modernization is shortening the edges of the process while the middle, DGIP's production queue, remains the part no applicant can accelerate beyond the published urgent lanes.
