UK passport approved: when will it arrive?

Approval is good news, but it is not the delivery notification. HM Passport Office still has to print the passport and hand it to its delivery partner. There is no public fixed service level from approval to printing, so an approval date alone cannot produce an honest doorstep date.
For a UK delivery, the useful clock starts when you are told the passport is on its way. Royal Mail says to allow 2 working days after that notification before contacting it. Standard passports are carried on a tracked service intended to arrive no later than the second working day after Royal Mail collects them. Why the tracker goes quiet after approval
The passport application tracker follows the application. Once Royal Mail has the envelope, the delivery record is the more useful source. A gap after approval can still be printing or handover, while a gap after the on-its-way message is a delivery question.
That distinction matters when deciding whom to contact. HM Passport Office handles the application and anything not yet accepted by Royal Mail. Royal Mail handles tracking once its system shows the item has been accepted.
How to track the delivery itself
Royal Mail's dedicated support page for HM Passport Office deliveries lets you track using either a 13 digit Royal Mail reference ending in GB, if you have one, or your 10 digit passport application reference, which starts with PEX or POD. The application reference is on your emails from HM Passport Office, so most people can track without ever being sent a separate tracking number.
If tracking shows that Royal Mail accepted the item but it has not moved, contact Royal Mail after the 2-working-day allowance. If Royal Mail has no record of it, or the item was returned to sender, contact HM Passport Office. Overseas applicants should use the DHL details in their notification instead of the UK Royal Mail route.
Urgent travel while the passport is in transit
Do not submit a second application through Fast Track or Premium after you have already applied. GOV.UK says an existing application cannot be converted into one of those services that way, and a duplicate application will not get the passport sooner or produce a refund.
Call the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000, or +44 (0)300 222 0000 from outside the UK, when urgent travel is at risk. The line is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm and weekends and bank holidays from 9am to 5:30pm. An adviser can check the case, but approval does not guarantee an emergency collection or earlier delivery.
The new passport and your documents are separate deliveries
Your new passport and the documents you sent with the application may arrive in different envelopes and on different days. HM Passport Office says supporting documents are returned separately. The service used for them can depend on whether you paid for secure document return.
Track each notification on its own. A delivered passport does not mean an old passport or certificate has been lost, but a separate item that misses its published delivery information should be followed up using the reference attached to that item.

Does the Fast Track service deliver faster than this?
Fast Track is an application service with its own one-week delivery commitment. It is not an upgrade you can add by submitting a second application after a standard application is already in progress.
Can I track the actual delivery?
Yes. Royal Mail's HM Passport Office support page accepts your 10 digit application reference, starting PEX or POD, as a tracking number, and a 13 digit Royal Mail reference if you have one. If your dispatch notice names a different courier, track with that carrier instead.
Where are my old passport and supporting documents?
