1. Job offer from a licensed sponsor
Employer side, before day 0
Only employers holding a sponsor licence can sponsor this visa. If the employer is not yet licensed, their licence application comes first and adds weeks; check the public register of licensed sponsors to confirm where things stand.

The CoS is an electronic record with a reference number you enter in the application. It states the role, salary, and start date. You must apply within 3 months of assignment, and the job details on it must match the application exactly.

The Skilled Worker timeline is really three clocks run by three parties. The employer controls the sponsorship clock: licence status, CoS assignment, and getting the role details right. Applying from inside versus outside the UK
Applying from outside the UK gets the shorter roughly 3-week standard. Applying from inside, switching from a student or another eligible route, gets the roughly 8-week standard but lets you stay and usually keep working under your existing conditions while the application is pending under section 3C protection.
The sharp edge for in-country applicants: leaving the common travel area while the application is pending withdraws it automatically. Book no travel between submission and decision unless you are prepared to abandon the application and reapply from abroad.
What actually delays Skilled Worker decisions
The routine failure points are mundane. A mismatch between the CoS and the form, salary below the required threshold for the occupation code, English evidence that is not on the approved list, or a missing TB certificate each push an application out of the straightforward pile. The CoS has an error or the start date passed

You need to travel while an in-country application is pending

The application was refused
Read the refusal letter for the exact ground. Many Skilled Worker refusals are evidential and fixable: the right English document, corrected financial evidence, or a corrected CoS, followed by a fresh application.
