Reading the Aadhaar update figure
Two different services wear one name
An Aadhaar update is one of two quite different transactions. Demographic changes, such as name, address, date of birth, and gender, can be requested online through the myAadhaar portal if a mobile number is registered against the Aadhaar for the login OTP. Biometric changes, and updating the registered mobile number itself, require a visit to an enrolment centre. Knowing which transaction you need is the difference between ten minutes at home and a queue across town.
Submission is not approval
An online request is not processed while you watch. The uploaded proof document goes to a verification team afterwards, and the real wait is that verification, not the form. A request is rejected when the document does not support the exact change requested or is not on the accepted list for that field, and a rejection means applying again properly rather than appealing.
The registered mobile is the master key
Every online route runs through the OTP sent to the registered mobile number. A holder whose registered number is old or lost cannot use the portal at all, and fixing the number is itself an enrolment-centre transaction. That is the trap behind many update queues: the visit people are trying to avoid is the prerequisite for avoiding future visits.
