Will your passport arrive before you fly?
“Up to 3 weeks” is not measured from the day you apply. It is measured from the day HM Passport Office receives your documents, usually your old passport arriving by post, which for most renewals is several days after submitting the form online. Counting from the wrong date is why an application that is actually on schedule can look overdue.

Put your trip date against the published range
This restates HM Passport Office’s own published turnaround against your dates, and shows what the paid routes actually change if the standard service does not fit. Nothing is submitted and nothing is stored.
Two things this calculation cannot see
A published range describes a queue, not your application. Anything that needs a second look, an identity confirmation that has not come back, a document query, sits outside the range entirely, and no figure here anticipates it. For most standard renewals the current passport is either cancelled the moment you apply or posted in depending on your case, and either way it stops being valid for travel from that point, whether or not it ever physically leaves your hands.

Two clocks, and only one of them is the wait
Old passport reaching the office
Published as up to 14 days, where your case needs it posted in at all. This is ordinary post, and no part of the published 3 weeks describes it. Applying earlier beats paying for a faster stamp on the envelope.
The standard service itself
up to 3 weeks, counted from documents received. This figure already includes returning the finished passport to you; HM Passport Office does not publish a separate return-post estimate the way some other countries do.
Two paid routes that do not ask why you need them
A detail worth knowing before assuming a paid upgrade is out of reach: unlike some countries’ urgent-passport systems, HM Passport Office does not ask an applicant to prove their travel is imminent before booking the 1 week Fast Track or Premium service. They are paid products anyone can book, at any time, for any reason.
1 week Fast Track
£192 for an adult, £156.50 for a child. An in-person appointment, bookable from the next day. Your current passport is checked at the appointment and handed back to you there rather than sent away, and the new one follows by courier about a week later. Covers renewals, replacements, a first child passport, and personal detail changes.
Premium (same day)
£239.50, renewal only, and only if the passport being renewed was issued after 31 December 2001. An appointment bookable 2 days to 3 weeks ahead; the new passport is ready around 4 hours after you attend, with your old passport checked and returned to you at that appointment.
The published fee is the whole cost of booking
There is no separate charge from HM Passport Office to secure a Fast Track or Premium slot. Third-party sites that charge extra to book an appointment are not the passport service, and reports of people being charged for a phone call that was free directly are common enough to be worth naming. Book through the official service or the Passport Adviceline on 0300 222 0000.
Questions people ask with a flight booked
Will my UK passport arrive before my flight?
That depends on which date the clock is actually running from, and most people count from the wrong one. HM Passport Office publishes the standard service as up to 3 weeks, but that period starts when it receives your documents, most often your old passport arriving by post, not when you submitted the application online. Someone who applied on a Sunday and posted their old passport on a Tuesday has a clock that started on Tuesday. The checker on this page does that arithmetic against your travel date.
Does the 3-week clock start when I apply online?
No, and this is the single most common miscount. HM Passport Office states that processing starts from when it receives your documents. If your case needs the old passport posted in, the days between applying and it arriving are ordinary post, not part of the 3 weeks. The application history on your tracker shows both dates separately, several days apart, and the earlier one is not the one that counts.
My flight is close. What can I actually do?
Two paid routes exist, and neither requires proving your travel is imminent to book, which is worth knowing before assuming you are not eligible. The 1 week Fast Track service (£192 for an adult) is an in-person appointment bookable from the next day; your current passport is checked and handed back to you there, and the new one follows by courier about a week later. The Premium same-day service (£239.50) is faster still but renewal-only, and only if the passport being renewed was issued after 31 December 2001.
Do I lose my old passport while I wait?
It depends on your case, and either way it stops being valid for travel the moment you apply. For some standard renewals the current passport is cancelled digitally and never needs to be sent anywhere; for others HM Passport Office asks you to post it in, and the online service tells you which applies to you. On the Fast Track and Premium routes it never leaves your hands beyond the appointment itself: it is checked there and either returned to you immediately (Fast Track) or used to verify you before the new one is ready (Premium).
How much does Fast Track or Premium cost?
The 1 week Fast Track service is £192 for an adult or £156.50 for a child. The Premium same-day service is £239.50 and covers one person; it is only available for renewing an adult passport issued after 31 December 2001. Fees change, so check the official fee page before paying anyone.
Is there a fee to book a Fast Track or Premium appointment itself?
The published fee is the total cost of the service, including the appointment; there is no separate booking charge from HM Passport Office. Third-party websites that charge extra to book an appointment for you are not the passport service, and paying one buys nothing an applicant cannot get directly through the official system for the published fee alone.
Does a comfortable estimate mean my passport will definitely arrive?
It means your dates sit inside a published range. A range describes the queue, not your application, and anything needing a second look, an identity confirmation that has not come back, a query about a document, sits outside it. QueueCheck cannot see your application and does not predict it. Treat a comfortable result as a reason to stop worrying rather than a reason to book non-refundable travel.
