Some immigrant-visa applicants request a Social Security number in the visa application; others must apply after arrival. The correct next step depends on what was requested and whether a card has already been issued—not on a guessed immigration category.

If you requested an SSN with the immigrant visa
Under Enumeration at Entry, the Department of State passes an approved immigrant-visa applicant's request through DHS to Social Security after admission. SSA then assigns or reissues the number and mails the card to the address connected with the immigration process. A separate office application is normally unnecessary while that process is working.
SSA materials describe an expected arrival in roughly 7 to 10 business days and instruct immigrants to contact SSA if the card has not arrived within three weeks after admission. QueueCheck uses the longer three-week point as a conservative follow-up reminder. It is not a guarantee and not a deadline that affects immigration status.

If you did not request one, or the process failed
Read SSA's current rules before making a trip. In general, SSA ties an original number for a noncitizen to DHS work authorization, although separate rules exist for certain federally funded benefits. A Social Security number by itself does not grant permission to work, and QueueCheck will not infer work authorization from possession of a card.
SSA says it needs evidence of age, identity and immigration status. Examples on its document page include a Permanent Resident Card, a machine-readable immigrant visa with an unexpired foreign passport, an Employment Authorization Document or qualifying I-94 evidence. The exact set depends on the application. Bring originals or copies certified by the issuing agency, not ordinary photocopies or notarized copies.

Protect the number once it is issued
Store the physical card securely and avoid carrying it every day unless an organisation specifically requires it. Employers and financial institutions may legitimately request an SSN for defined purposes, but an unexpected call, text or email demanding the number is a reason to stop and verify the organisation through a separate contact channel.
If the printed name is wrong or a legal name later changes, use SSA's correction process. A replacement card normally carries the same number. Do not enter the number into the QueueCheck planner, a support email or an immigration discussion forum.

Should I apply again immediately if the card has not arrived?
Not usually when an SSN was requested through the immigrant-visa process. SSA instructs people to follow up if the card has not arrived within three weeks after admission.
Does an SSN prove that I am allowed to work?
No. Work authorization comes from immigration law and DHS documentation, not from the Social Security number itself.
