OCI card processing time: what happens between applying and holding the card

Every OCI application passes through two separate pipelines: adjudication at your jurisdiction mission, then manufacturing and dispatch from India. The status tracker mostly describes the first pipeline, which is why granted is the most misread word in the process. Approval ends the decision; it does not start the courier.

Planning works better when you treat the two halves separately: acknowledgment to granted is the variable stretch that depends on your mission's workload and the cleanliness of your file, while granted to card-in-hand is a fairly consistent few weeks of printing and shipping that no amount of calling accelerates.

The portal's photo and signature specifications are strict, and failures do not reject instantly; they surface as a deficiency after the mission looks at the file, which can be weeks into the wait. A square, plain-background, recent photograph that matches the printed application, and a signature image inside the size limits, are the cheapest speed upgrade in the whole process. Children who cannot sign give a thumb impression, following the portal's own instructions.

The same logic applies to every document in the packet: the mission checks the uploads against the originals the provider forwards, and any mismatch between what was typed, what was uploaded, and what was posted resolves at correspondence speed. Getting one packet exactly right beats getting two packets in quickly.

Anyone who ever held an Indian passport must surrender it and obtain a renunciation certificate before an OCI application can complete. If you naturalised years ago and never formally renounced, that certificate is its own application with its own fee and its own queue, and it commonly becomes the surprise that adds weeks to an OCI timeline that looked simple.

Check the drawer before you check the calendar: if your renunciation certificate exists from a previous application, a copy rides along and costs nothing. If it does not exist, file for it first and let the OCI follow, because the mission cannot finish scrutiny without it.

Since the Ministry of Home Affairs revised the guidelines in 2021, the OCI card is required to be reissued once when a new passport is issued after the holder turns 20, so the card carries adult facial features. The old requirements to reissue with every childhood passport renewal, and once more after turning 50, were dispensed with.

Outside that single mandatory reissue, a passport renewal means an online update, not a new card: upload a copy of the new passport and a recent photo on the portal within three months of receiving the passport, at no fee. A spouse of foreign origin who holds OCI through marriage uploads the same documents plus a declaration that the marriage subsists on each renewal. The card itself, with the old passport number printed on it, stays valid; the uploads keep the record current.

Applications bunch heavily before India's winter travel season, and files lodged from October through December reportedly run to several months instead of the usual one to two. If a December trip depends on the card, the comfortable filing window is late summer; the risky one is the autumn everyone else picks.

Jurisdiction is fixed by where you live: each mission serves defined states or regions, with VFS Global handling intake in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia and BLS International in Canada.
