A registration that crosses two continents
An OCI application is filed online, but the file itself travels: documents go to the local Indian mission or its outsourcing partner, the decision happens at the mission, the card is printed centrally in India, and the printed card is dispatched back to the mission or the applicant. Five hands touch it, which is why the status stages matter more than any single figure, and why two applicants at different missions have genuinely different processes.
The documents decide the speed
OCI eligibility runs on proof: of Indian origin across generations, of relationships, and, for former Indian citizens, of renunciation. Verification stops on inconsistencies as small as a name spelled differently across a birth certificate, a marriage certificate, and a passport. Applications with clean, consistent documentation move; applications that need a clarification letter wait for one.
Granted is not printed, and printed is not delivered
The status people celebrate is granted, and the wait people feel is what follows it: printing happens in India on its own schedule, and the dispatch leg back to the mission and out for collection is a courier process the mission does not control.
