Another week opens for bookings
Learner drivers in England, Scotland and Wales can now search for practical car tests through 21 February 2027. DVSA's 7 September update extends the previous 14 February horizon by one week, adding dates from 15 to 21 February. Whether you can actually book one depends on availability at your chosen test centre. If you need an earlier test, cancellations and extra examiner capacity can produce appointments throughout the week.

What DVSA changed on 7 September
- DVSA's headline availability statement and its update history both confirm the new end date of 21 February 2027. The previous update, dated 31 August, gave 14 February. The change opens another week for searches; it does not reserve a test for anyone.
- The agency says it releases a new week of appointments at 6 am every Monday, including bank holidays, 24 weeks ahead. The 7 September release therefore adds the week beginning 15 February 2027.
- The source has an internal date inconsistency: its recent-release table labels the row for the week beginning 15 February as 7 August 2026. That conflicts with the dated 7 September update history and the current headline. It appears to be a typographical error, which DVSA had not corrected when QueueCheck checked the page on 7 September.
- DVSA publishes a page-update date but no update time. Its stated 6 am release schedule should not be read as an independently verified timestamp for the webpage edit.
The dates and measures to keep separate
The newly released dates run from Monday 15 February to Sunday 21 February 2027. These are the boundaries of the national booking horizon, not confirmation that every centre operates on every date.
DVSA's published schedule lists 14 September 2026 as the next release, for the week beginning 22 February 2027. That is a scheduled future release and was not open under the 7 September horizon.
The same guidance reports an 11.1-week median for learners who completed tests in July 2026. That historical measure and the 24-week appointment-release horizon describe different things; neither predicts an individual learner's wait.
Questions about the release
Does this mean a test is available at my local centre?
No. The date tells you how far ahead searches are open nationally. A centre can have no remaining appointments within that range, and availability can change as learners alter bookings.
Should I wait until next Monday to look for a cancellation?
No. DVSA says earlier appointments can appear at any time during the week. Use the official service without repeatedly refreshing over a short period.
Why does the GOV.UK table say 7 August?
That row conflicts with the page's 7 September update history and headline. QueueCheck treats it as an apparent typo and bases this report's release date on the dated update history.
What the release means for your search
For someone ready to book a February test, the additional week increases the date range they can search. It does not establish how many appointments were added nationally, how many remain, or whether any are available at a particular centre.
For someone trying to move an existing test forward, Monday's release is only one part of the system. DVSA says earlier appointments can appear when another learner cancels or changes a booking, or when it adds examiner availability.
The agency says there is no best time to search for an earlier test and no benefit in joining the Monday 6 am queue specifically to find a test sooner than 24 weeks away. That queue is usually busiest when the new distant week opens.
How to check and book
- Use the official GOV.UK booking service to check dates at centres you can attend. Book the test yourself and check practical arrangements, including access to a suitable car, before committing to an appointment.
- If you already have a booking, use GOV.UK's change-your-driving-test service to look for an earlier appointment. Do not assume Monday morning is the only opportunity for something sooner to appear.
- Search at reasonable intervals. DVSA advises against repeated searches over a short period and against accessing the service on multiple devices at once, which can lead to a search limit or Error 15.
- Once you select an appointment and accept the timing warning, complete the booking within the stated 15-minute window. An appointment may cease to be available if you do not finish in time.
Why the horizon is not your waiting time
A booking horizon is the furthest date DVSA has opened for searches. It is different from the earliest test available near you and from the time a learner ultimately waits between booking and taking a test.
Most test centres do not have a waiting list or cancellation list. DVSA describes a limited on-hold option at some centres that do not open every day, shown only where available. Do not assume there is a general queue you can join by contacting a centre.
DVSA says its customer-service agents see the same appointments as learners and cannot create new ones. Its booking service normally operates from 6 am to 11:40 pm daily.
Availability and source limitations
