Reading the DVSA practical driving test figure
Two official numbers that disagree, and both are honest
The agency now publishes waiting times two ways, and they can differ by more than double. The long-standing measure counts how far ahead you have to look before a test centre still has a reasonable share of its slots free, which describes what booking feels like from a standing start. A newer measure counts the weeks actually elapsed between booking and sitting the test, for tests that were completed. The first describes the shop window; the second describes what people walked out with, including everyone who caught a cancellation.
Which of the two applies to you
If you are booking today with no test held, the availability measure is closer to your situation, because you are choosing from what is visible now. If you already hold a booking and are watching for something earlier, the completed-test measure is closer, because it includes the cancellations and rebookings that shorten real waits. Neither is the number for your test centre, which can sit far from either national figure.
The national figure hides the only thing that matters
Test availability is intensely local. Neighbouring centres can differ by months, and a learner willing and able to travel is choosing between markets rather than waiting in one queue. This is why national coverage of driving-test waits is so often useless as advice: the decision in front of a learner is which centre to book, and no national average answers that.
The booking rules changed, and they changed who can act
Recent changes tightened who may book and how often a booking may be moved: instructors booking on a pupil's behalf, and booking or changing a test for someone else, have been restricted, and the number of permitted changes to a held booking is limited. Anyone whose plan was to book early and shuffle the date later, or to have an instructor manage it, is working from a system that no longer behaves that way.

The seven-week driving-test promise slipped again as July's median reached 11.1 weeks
The government promised a seven-week driving-test wait by summer 2026. DVSA's July data now shows an 11.1-week median for completed tests, while new appointments are released 24 weeks ahead and the seven-week target has moved to autumn 2027.
