One postmark date, two switches
Two things now turn on the same postmark date. Filing the I-485 before September 18 already meant being adjudicated under the outgoing public charge framework; USCIS has added a second, mechanical stake, because the form itself changes edition that day with no grace period. Before September 18, only the 01/20/25 edition is accepted. On or after it, only the 09/18/26 edition is. Use the wrong one on the wrong side of the line and the filing is rejected, and a rejected filing loses its place in both races at once.
Who the edition line catches
Anyone preparing an adjustment-of-status filing in the next month, the attorneys and preparers assembling those packets, and EAD and extension-of-stay applicants whose Forms I-765 and I-539 face the same edition switch three days earlier.
What re-dates on September 18, and on September 15
- USCIS will publish a 09/18/26 edition of Form I-485 on September 18, 2026, revised to align with the public charge final rule; it replaces the 01/20/25 edition.
- There is no grace period: the 01/20/25 edition is accepted only if postmarked or electronically submitted before September 18, and rejected on or after it.
- The 09/18/26 edition works the other way around: USCIS accepts it only when postmarked or electronically submitted on or after September 18, so the preview cannot be filed early.
- USCIS published the preview edition and instructions in advance precisely because there is no grace period.

Editions, postmarks, and what a rejection costs
USCIS versions forms by edition date, printed in the footer of every page; acceptance turns on the edition and the postmark or electronic submission date, not on when the form was downloaded.
A rejection is not a denial: the package is returned unadjudicated, but the original postmark date is gone, and with it whatever that date controlled.
The revision exists because the public charge final rule takes effect the same day, so the form and the framework switch together.

I am mailing my I-485 this week. Which edition do I use?
The current 01/20/25 edition, postmarked before September 18. The 09/18/26 preview cannot be filed early: USCIS says it will only accept the new edition when it is postmarked or submitted on or after September 18.
My I-485 is already pending with USCIS. Do I need to do anything?
No. Edition rules govern what USCIS accepts at intake, by postmark or electronic submission date. An application already receipted stays on the form it was filed on.
What if my old-edition form arrives at USCIS after September 18?
The alert turns on the postmark or electronic submission date, not the arrival date. A 01/20/25 edition postmarked before September 18 is within the stated rule even if it is delivered later; keep proof of the postmark.
The mechanical failure mode the race just gained
For anyone racing the September 18 regime line, the edition rule adds a mechanical failure mode: the packet must carry the 01/20/25 edition and a postmark before September 18, because an old-edition filing rejected and refiled later lands on the new form and under the new guidance together.
For filings planned after September 18, the preview is preparation material only; the version to submit is the published 09/18/26 edition, postmarked on or after that date.
EAD renewals move first: from September 15, an I-765 on an older edition is rejected, which turns a routine renewal into lost weeks for anyone who downloads the form early and mails it late.
Before the line, after it, and the companion forms
- Filing an I-485 before September 18: use the current 01/20/25 edition, confirm the edition date in the footer, and get the postmark or electronic submission in before the deadline with margin for rework.
- Filing on or after September 18: build from the preview now if it helps preparation, but submit only the published 09/18/26 edition, and do not mail anything dated 09/18/26 early.
- Filing an I-765 or I-539 around mid-September: the same switch happens on September 15 for those forms, so match the edition to the filing date there too.
