The K-1 is a visa for the fiancé of a US citizen to enter the United States in order to marry within ninety days. It runs in three distinct stages that people routinely collapse into one: a petition adjudicated by USCIS, consular processing at an embassy abroad, and adjustment of status after the marriage.
A USCIS figure describes the petition only
A USCIS processing time describes the petition stage only. It says nothing about how long the National Visa Center holds a case, how long an embassy takes to schedule an interview, or how long adjustment takes afterwards. Comparing a total journey against a petition figure is the single commonest source of alarm on this route.
Relationship evidence and embassy scheduling
Evidence that the relationship is genuine is the substance of the petition, and thin documentation is where petitions come apart. It may draw a request for evidence, which stops the clock while you answer; since August 2026 USCIS guidance also allows an officer to deny a request that does not establish eligibility without asking first, so a filing built to be completed later carries more risk than it used to. Embassy scheduling varies enormously by post and is not a function of the petition at all.
