Reading the TSA PreCheck figure
Domestic screening, not international arrivals
TSA PreCheck is expedited screening for domestic US departures and is separate from Global Entry, which covers international arrivals. Enrolment involves an online application followed by an in-person appointment for fingerprints and document verification.
The appointment is often the longer half
Published timing describes how long approval takes after the enrolment appointment. It does not include the wait for an appointment, which varies by location and is often the longer half, and it does not include the airline steps needed to get the Known Traveler Number onto a booking.
Names that do not match across three systems
A name that does not match across the application, the identity documents, and the airline reservation is the usual reason a benefit fails to appear on a boarding pass. Criminal history triggers a review that leaves the routine timeline. Renewal and first-time enrolment are different processes, and a renewal left too late leaves a gap where the benefit simply stops.
