Reading the US urgent passport figure
Two named routes, and neither is a faster mailbox
The State Department publishes two routes for genuinely time-critical passports, and both are appointment workflows rather than a quicker version of the mail-in queue. The urgent travel service is for international travel within 14 calendar days, booked by phone and completed in person at a passport agency. The life-or-death emergency service, for travel within three business days driven by a qualifying family emergency, has its own contact route and documentation expectations. Those windows are the agency's own eligibility definitions: outside them, the answer is the expedited mail service, not an agency appointment.
Proof of travel is the gate
Agency appointments are rationed by evidence: the itinerary or appointment that proves the travel date is what qualifies you, and the emergency route adds documentation of the emergency itself. Arriving with the trip unproven is the classic wasted appointment. The gap between calling and the first available appointment also varies by city, which is why the route works best the moment a trip becomes real rather than the week it departs.
Same-day is the exception, not the design
An agency appointment usually produces a passport quickly, sometimes the same day, but the system is built around your travel date rather than your preference: the agency targets issuance before you fly, which can mean a return visit. Bring everything a normal application needs, completed but unsigned forms included, because the appointment compresses the timeline without waiving any requirement.
