The useful part of IRCC's new page is not the big inventory number by itself. It shows why two applicants can both be waiting but not be in the same kind of wait. Some files are still in ordinary processing. Some permanent residence files are waiting for yearly target space under the Immigration Levels Plan. Temporary-residence figures on this page are for new applications, not extensions. Proof-of-citizenship certificates are a separate queue from citizenship grants and were listed with 28,940 issued and 82,020 awaiting finalization as of May 31, 2026.

You need proof of Canadian citizenship
This is not the same as naturalizing. You are asking IRCC for a certificate that proves citizenship you may already have, so document quality is the practical battle.
Your work permit is tied to a PR plan
Track work authorization separately from PR finalization. The temporary-residence inventory figure is for new applications, not extensions, and losing work status is a different problem from waiting for PR.

Usually not by uploading the same evidence again. If the issue is annual admission space, the useful actions are keeping your account current, responding quickly to requests, maintaining status if you are in Canada, and avoiding mistakes that create a new delay.
Does the work-permit inventory tell me my extension wait?
No. IRCC says the temporary-residence inventory figures on this page are for new applications and do not include extensions. If you filed an extension, read your account messages and current IRCC processing-time page for that application type.
Is proof of citizenship the same as applying to become a citizen?
No. Proof of citizenship is for someone who is already a Canadian citizen and needs a certificate. A citizenship grant is for a permanent resident applying to become a citizen.

If your PR file is waiting for annual space, more uploads may not make the quota move faster. Your next useful step is to keep your account current and understand your program's levels-plan pressure.
If your file is still in ordinary processing, completeness, documents, background checks, medicals, biometrics, and office workload can still decide the practical wait.
If you are seeking proof of citizenship, compare yourself with proof-of-citizenship applicants, not citizenship-grant applicants, because the reason for applying and the certificate needed are different.
Checks before assuming your file is stuck
- First identify your lane: temporary residence, permanent residence, citizenship grant, or proof of citizenship. Do not compare all IRCC waits as one queue.
- If you are in a PR stream, check whether your route is affected by annual spaces under the Levels Plan before assuming silence means a missing document.
- If you are applying for proof of citizenship, keep ancestry records, birth certificates, name-change evidence, translations, photos, and IRCC messages together because a returned application can restart the practical wait.
- If you have an in-Canada work permit extension or work-permit-linked PR plan, do not read the new-application inventory as an extension dashboard. Keep your expiry date, maintained-status position, employer letters, and any IRCC extension notices separate from PR finalization.
