USCIS N-400 · Complete timeline guide
How long US naturalization takes in 2026, stage by stage: filing the N-400, biometrics, the interview and civics test, the decision, and the oath ceremony, plus what to do when a stage stalls.
USCIS N-400 · Complete process guide
Form N-400 asks for every trip outside the United States of 24 hours or more during the statutory period, which leaves short border crossings out of the list but not out of your own records. How the 24-hour line works, what six months and one year away actually trigger, and how to reconstruct a travel history when land crossings left no trace.

USCIS sometimes asks for evidence an agency will not issue. The IRS tax return transcript is the clearest example: it exists for the current year and three prior years only, so an older year cannot be produced however hard anyone tries. What the transcript types actually cover, the copy of the return that reaches further back, and how the response deadline works.
USCIS N-400 · Immigration records guide
USCIS holds your A-file, the immigration court holds the record of proceedings, and CBP holds your border crossings. They are three separate requests with three different clocks, and two of them have free routes most people never use. What each one contains, the twenty-business-day rule the law sets, and why a court had to order USCIS to obey it.
USCIS N-400 · Reading the numbers
The published range describes cases USCIS already finished, not the one you filed. Behind it sits a second, separately calculated date that decides when the agency will accept an inquiry at all. What each number is built from, and what each one entitles you to.

Home Affairs decides most conferral applications within months, and then a second queue starts that nobody warns you about: the ceremony, run through local councils, where the pledge that actually makes you a citizen happens. The published percentiles for both waits, why the ceremony varies by postcode, and what the approval letter does and does not change.

USCIS incorporated personal, or neighborhood, investigations into its Naturalization Policy Manual on August 25, 2026. The update explains what officers may examine, how far the inquiry can look back, and why the process will not apply identically to every Form N-400 case.

IRCC's August 20 update says it is now sending acknowledgement of receipt letters for citizenship applications received the week of March 23, 2026. Because an applicant cannot track anything until the AOR arrives, that marker answers the question a processing figure cannot: whether silence is expected yet, and roughly how long acknowledgement is taking.

Aug 16, 2026 · Canada
IRCC's August 10 update puts proof of Canadian citizenship at 25 months, up from 19 a month earlier and 10 in January. The queue passed 100,000 for the first time and stands near 121,800. Behind the climb is one dated cause: December's removal of the first-generation limit on citizenship by descent, which made a large new group eligible faster than IRCC can issue certificates.
