What makes Internal Revenue Service different
The IRS publishes status per system, not per website
There is no single page saying whether the IRS is up. Electronic filing, the information returns system, and the online account each have their own operational status page, and one can be in a maintenance window while the others run normally. Check the page for the system you are actually using.
Maintenance here is scheduled and published in advance
Several IRS systems take routine maintenance windows, some weekly and some announced days ahead with an expected return time. Filing against a deadline during a published window is avoidable, and checking the schedule before you start costs nothing.
Rejected is not refused
An electronic filing rejection is a validation failure, not a decision about your taxes. The IRS publishes known issues against specific rejection codes, and the commonest cause is a prior-year figure that does not match the record the IRS holds. What matters is that a rejected return is not a filed return.

Is the IRS website down?
The IRS publishes operational status per system rather than for the site as a whole, and those pages are linked above. Electronic filing can be in a maintenance window while the online account works normally, so check the status page for the system you are using.
Why does Where's My Refund say there is no information?
Most often because the return has been transmitted but not yet accepted, or because it was filed on paper. The tool reports on accepted returns, so a return still in transit and a return never received look the same from outside. A mismatch in the amount or filing status you enter also returns no information rather than an error.
My return was rejected. Have I been audited?
No. A rejection is a validation failure at the filing stage and carries no judgement about your taxes. Read the rejection code rather than the summary message, and check it against the published known issues, since most rejections have a documented cause and fix.
The site broke while I was filing near the deadline. What now?
Screenshot the error with the time visible before closing the tab, and check whether the system was in a published maintenance window. A rejected or unsubmitted return is not a filed return, so establish what state your filing is actually in rather than assuming it went through.
Why can I not get into my IRS online account?
Account access runs through an identity verification layer separate from the tax systems, so this is frequently not an IRS systems problem at all. Work out whether the sign-in step or the page after it is failing, because they have different fixes.
