Reading the Green Card renewal or replacement (I-90) figure
The receipt notice is doing the work, not the old card
Filing to replace an expiring card produces a receipt notice that extends the validity of the expired card itself. Presented together, the expired card and the notice evidence both continued permanent resident status and the right to work, which is why the processing figure on this page is usually less urgent than it looks. What matters is holding the pair. Someone who has the notice and has lost the card has the paperwork but not the combination that proves anything.
One form, several situations that behave differently
The same application covers a card that is expiring, one that was lost, stolen or damaged, one carrying a name that has since changed, and one that was issued with incorrect information. These are not variations in difficulty so much as different evidentiary problems. Where the card is gone entirely, an appointment at a field office can produce a passport stamp evidencing status in the meantime, which is a separate route worth knowing about rather than a faster version of the same one.
A two-year card is not renewed at all
This is the most common misdirection in the whole process. A conditional permanent resident, holding a card valid for two years, does not renew it with this form. They petition to remove the conditions, on a different form depending on whether the status came through marriage or through investment, within a defined window before the card expires. Failing to do so does not produce an expired card; it ends the status. Anyone reading this page while holding a two-year card is on the wrong page, and the published figure here does not describe their wait.
